I've yet to see any pundit put this out there but it's important to note that Alabama has a large automobile manufacturing industry. Senator Shelby's bashing of Detroit should probably be taken in the context that Mercedes, Honda and Hyundai all make cars in Alabama.
Shelby's home state stands to benefit directly from a collapse of the big three auto-makers. There is nothing wrong with a Senator staking out a position on policy that benefits his or her state directly, indeed that's what they are elected to do. The media though should point these things out so viewers and readers have some sense of context.
