Instead we get bullshit like this,
"I've always said we have to have responsible drilling," Udall said, during
the news conference.
"I'm not opposed to drilling. What I've been opposed to is the
Bush-Cheney focus solely on oil. I've been opposed to Bush-Cheney line that we
can drill our way out of this challenge."
Udall is not fooling anyone who has been paying attention. Lucky for him it's mid-August and the Olympics are on so people are distracted.
It appears that Republicans have Democrats on the run... again. I'm really getting tired of standing up for candidates who constantly retreat on issues of principle and leave their most ardent supporters twisting in the wind, egg on our faces.
This sort of crap is why I am on hiatus from working directly for a candidate or an elected official, even the best ones pull stunts like this. They are politicians after all.

You should have learned by now to never trust the Rocky Mountain News to tell the whole story.
The Valley Courier in Alamosa does a more thorough job: http://www.alamosanews.com/V2_news_articles.php?heading=0&story_id=8807&page=72
No need to freak out, it's exactly what you are suggesting. Expand drilling offshore in a limited and environmentally responsible way if and only if it's tied to a long-term renewable energy and energy efficiency plan.
Go Big Oil Mark!
