Watching the media hyper-ventilate (for a second day now) over Phil Gramm's comments has been thoroughly entertaining. This seems to me to be the first time that the media has attached themselves so thoroughly to a McCain story.
It's interesting that it took an objectively stupid statement from Gramm to get the media to start exploring McCain and his economic plan and economic advisers. Gramm's role in deregulating the banking industry and creating the conditions for our present banking meltdown have been known for some time and yet they have not been reported on in any serious depth. McCain has been floating patently false information to support his economic plans with barely a mention. Then there's the issue of McCain's "pledge" to balance the budget, an absurd proposition on it's face given his tax cutting plans, and his fictional "support" from 300 economists for his Magical Pony in every Garage economic plans.
In short there have been plenty of opportunities for a smack down on McCain and his economic policies but it took a verbal gaffe from McCain confidant Gramm to get them off of their collective duffs. I'm not complaining, this is an eminently fair treatment of Gramm and McCain I'm just wondering what took so long.
