Blackhawks over downtown Denver

A group of us were sitting outside celebrating a friends birthday last night when we saw two military helicopters (turns out they were Blackhawks) buzzing downtown at low altitude. They passed a few times and each time they did more people on the busy patio took notice, stopped their conversations and stared at them in a bit of bewilderment. I lived in the heart of downtown for several years, I and many of my friends work in downtown - none of us had seen anything quite like it before.

The Rocky Mountain News tells us that it was not preparation work for the DNC,

"It's nothing more than Special Operations Command training with local authorities," said Lt. Nathan Potter, with Special Operations Command, which has authority over special forces from all branches of the military.

Potter would not say which branch of the military was flying the choppers over Denver.

The training has nothing to do with preparations for the Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Denver in August, Potter said.

"It's routine preparation for the global war on terrorism," he said.

Okay then.

As a friend noted today - odd that nearly 7 years after 9/11 we're witnessing the first of these exercises, no?

Truly a bizarre site.
