And now Dave Weigel indulges Rand Paul's philosophical hair splitting over Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Act.
This isn't an academic debate, no matter how hard Paul (or, apparently, Weigel) would prefer it to be. The American South was an apartheid system for nearly a century after the Civil War. You cannot be against racism but also against any legal mechanism for ending that apartheid system. You don't get to have it both ways.
