Today is my 30th birthday but also the 36th Anniversary of the untimely death of original Grateful Dead keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. I'm a huge fan of the Dead but I've always felt a little closer to Pig knowing that he died on the same day I was born. He was an incredible blues man and the true life blood of the seminal American band that he lead for some 7 years.
Here's Pigpen in 1970 performing my favorite tune of his "Easy Wind." The verse quoted in the title is ironic in a morbid sense. In reality Pig was dead within 3 years of singing this version of the tune, from complications related to his drinking at the age of just 27.
