So everyone is speculating as to why Judd Gregg pulled his nomination. Some think it was over a dispute about the Census. Others are convinced that was merely a "
canard." Others think it was a fight over entitlements or the stimulus bill. I find it hard to believe that Gregg would publicly accept the nomination without having discussed those very significant issues at length with Obama. So what is it? I'm hesitant to
jump on the
bandwagon that wants to blame his GOP counterparts for strong arming him. There's no evidence of that that I know of at this point. Apparently Gregg has an aide who is tied to Abramoff, I suppose that could do it.
More interesting is the development tonight
as reported by the Manchester NH Union Leader,
U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg abruptly pulled out as commerce secretary nominee yesterday and further surprised everyone by announcing he will not run for re-election in 2010.
Got that? He's leaving politics all together. Just giving up and walking away. That is, in my opinion, pretty bizarre behavior. My mind races to think of what could have happened to Gregg in the last 3 weeks to bring us to this rather dramatic turn of events.
