There's been a lot of work recently from right-wingers to rewrite history and obscure the economic records of Herbert Hoover and FDR. It's complicated stuff, I've read a lot about it and have a decent grasp of the facts and numbers but it's an area that is easy to distort because it is so complicated. One can disingenuously cite statistics and and the like in a vacuum and paint a very distorted portrait of the Great Depression, the responses of Hoover and FDR and the efficacy of those responses.
