Nothing like waiting until late on a Friday to acknowledge uncomfortable news. Ezra of course blames the system. That's a complete cop-out. Many (myself included) have argued that the appointment process should be changed but that's rather beside the point. To paraphrase Don Rumsfeld, you select Senators with the system you have not the system you wish you had.
The fact of the matter is leading elite liberal pundits savaged Caroline Kennedy for no other reason that they thought she was too aristocratic. The end result is that Kennedy became nuclear, didn't get the appointment and a very conservative Democrat who supports warrantless surveillance, is shaky on gay rights and bad on a host of other liberal issues is now the junior Senator from New York. Oh and we'll be handing her House seat back to the GOP.
