Not "politicizing" the troops is just as much of a political football as actually "politicizing" the troops would have been.

We are witnessing an ideology that is bankrupt on every level. They have nothing to run on so the campaign breaks down to daily outrages to keep rallying the troops around a shitty candidate running an epically shitty campaign. Kaminsky is a low-level pawn but he knows his role and plays it well - catapulting the propaganda.
