Commander in Chief

If John McCain were President during the Korean War would he have allowed MacArthur to drop a few nukes on China?

The current GOP hides behind The Man They Call Patreaus and act as if no General in history has ever been, you know, wrong. The "logic" seems to be that whatever the commander on the ground says is always correct. Uncritical fealty to Generals seems like a recipe for disaster.

Historically speaking if Truman had listened to MacArthur we would have nuked China sometime in early 1951. If Kennedy had slavishly followed the advice of the military brass the Cuban Missile Crisis would not have ended as the greatest diplomatic victory of the 20th Century but rather as World War III. Clearly Generals should be consulted and their opinions given great weight but the Commander in Chief should be weighing considerations and geo-political factors that are way beyond the purview of any General.
