Cardinal sins

Andy Sullivan on warrantless-wiretapping,

In the period after 9/11 in question, I do not find these cardinal sins.

He's joking right? Surely a highly paid and respected journalist like Sullivan realizes that Bush was pushing for warrantless wiretapping beginning in February of 2001? Warantless surveillance has been a priority for Bush from the moment he took office. 9/11 merely provided a fig leaf to hide behind.

And, as one of Sullivan's readers notes, "the period after 9/11" is a pretty imprecise standard. The surveillance techniques in question continued for 6 years after the attacks. Pretending that the Bush administration engaged in unconstitutional surveillance only in the after-math of the 9/11 attacks is to ignore all known facts and reality itself.

They were wiping their asses with the 4th Amendment from the moment they took office.
