Boulder cross-walk accident

A high school student was struck by a driver last night in Boulder. The student was crossing Broadway on his bicycle at one of the flashing crosswalks and was struck by an elderly woman from Florida who was confused by the flashing crosswalk sign. Luckily the student survived and should be released from the hospital today.

Every time I go to Boulder and drive down that stretch of Broadway by CU I remark at how dangerous the crosswalks are. I marvel at the fact that people are not regularly struck by vehicles while crossing that street. Broadway is a busy street with fast moving traffic and the flashing crosswalks have always struck me as inherently dangerous and confusing to drivers. The City of Boulder should think seriously about placing a more standard traffic signal along Broadway or providing a pedestrian overpass or underpass.

There actually is an underpass within a block of where that crosswalk is. That said, I have always been amazed at peoples' lack of awareness when crossing streets in Boulder. It seems like the attitude is cross first, look second. I agree that that crosswalk is kind of awkward, but Boulder is a very pedestrian friendly town overall.

I had no idea that was there Matt, thanks for heads up.

It's definitely a walk first attitude and on most streets in Boulder I don't think it's so bad. It's just that one stretch that always worries me.

I've started riding my bike again so I'm paying attention to these things now! ha
