Shorter Megan McArdle
"I oppose the death penalty but I really wish we could apply it in more arbitrary circumstances than the law presently allows."
Seriously, that's what she said. Read it for yourself and see if her post contains even a modicum of coherent internal logic.
She's just inane. As far as I can tell she has no real core beliefs. She professes to be a libertarian of some sort but her blog is usually just her vapid ramblings about whatever is in the news that day. When she does engage in a substantive discussion she has a tendency to just make shit up. She's a rich girl from the Upper West side and the Ivy League who has lived a life of total privilege and doesn't seem to be able to grasp that the real world bears very little resemblance to her life.
There's nothing "wrong" with her background per se. The issue comes in when such a person is paid to comment on society, current events and politics and they seem oblivious to the fact that their life experiences have been far outside the norm. Her obliviousness lends a certain "Let them eat cake" snobbishness to just about everything she writes.
