Memo to Rocky Mountain News

In an unsigned editorial today the Rocky Mountain News asks,

Since when did "elite" become a pejorative word?

This was asked, apparently, without a hint of irony. I have an idea RMN editors - why don't you ask your Editorial page editor Vincent Carroll. He likes to throw that pejorative around or at least quote others who use it as such. So long as they are impugning Mexicans, "liberal" universities or other right-wing bogeymen Carroll seems to have no issue using the word "elite" in a pejorative sense.

Some examples from a very brief search of the Rocky's website. I'm sure if you used Lexis-Nexis one could find many more.
