There was a little bit of buzz yesterday around the idea of Hillary Clinton running for Governor of N.Y. as a consolation prize for bowing out of the Dem primary.
I'm all for finding a way to throw Hillary overboard but why would she be interested in being governor? Sure it sounds nice - she gets to be Chief Executive of a fairly large, diverse and prosperous state but dig a little deeper and you'll see it wouldn't be such a good deal.
She may be chief executive of the state but as governors quickly find out - they are at the mercy of the national economy and the whims of the governing party in Washington. As governor your ability to affect these things is pretty limited. New York in particular is looking like a less and less attractive place to govern given that the national crisis in the financial sector is going to severely damage the economy of the state.
She arguably has more influence as 1 of 100 federal senators than has the sole state level chief executive. Governors spend an inordinate amount of their time trying to clean up messes that Washington creates - see immigration, health care, education, transportation.
