Gerald Ferraro

Looks like my first post on my new blog will be dedicated to Geraldine Ferraro. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about that but, alas, here we are.

The former Democratic Party vice-presidential nominee let us know that,
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she continued. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
Well, that's pleasant - isn't it? A few points here:
  1. It's a bit disturbing to have an avowed and ardent feminist attacking the first serious African-American candidate for President in our history.
  2. That she's attacking Obama on behalf of the first serious female candidate for President in our history is an interesting twist
  3. It apparently has not occurred to Ms. Ferraro that a key premise for Hillary Clinton's candidacy is that she happens to be married to Bill Clinton. If being black in America is lucky then being married to Bill Clinton is certainly lucky as well.
  4. Would Geraldine Ferraro have any sort of bully pulpit if she had been born Gerald Ferraro and not Geraldine?
She's undoubtedly a smart and accomplished woman but this is an indefensible comment. If a surrogate for John McCain said something similar Dems would (rightfully) be up in arms.
