Minority Outreach

The South Carolina legislature has their own Dave Schulthies,

It has been quite a campaign for South Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley (pictured).

Haley, who has the backing of Sarah Palin, has faced two allegations of extramarital affairs in recent weeks - both of which she has vehemently denied. Now she is in the middle of a controversy involving one of her rivals, state Sen. Jake Knotts, who called her - along with President Obama - a "raghead."

"We already got one raghead in the White House," Knotts said on an Internet political talk show last night, according to The State. "We don't need another in the Governor's Mansion."

Haley's parents are Indian immigrants, and she was raised as a Sikh before converting to become Methodist. Citing those who saw Knotts' comments, The State reports that he "talked at length about Haley's parents' religion and her family" on the show.

Stay classy GOP. Wonder what Bobby Jindal thinks of all of this?

Well, He is the King of the World...

James Cameron is going to save the Gulf of Mexico, we hope. The appropriate response,

Fuck. Fuck it.The government is inviting James Cameron to workshop his ideas on how to stop the Gulf Coast oil spill? You know what that means, right? We’re fucked. Boys, if you could play us out that would be great. I mean, I know that James Cameron has the world’s most extensive collection of Titanic figurines, and that one time he wore a fanny-pack to Brazil so that he could hug the jungle back together, but I am pretty sure that if the nation’s leading Actual Ocean Scientists and Trained For Real Oil Spill Disaster Relief Experts are running so thin on ideas that we are inviting “the dude who made Abyss” into the chambers of power to try and, you know, mix it up, I for one am saying goodbye to my loved ones and climbing onto the roof of my building with a life-preserver around my neck and a gun with one bullet in the chamber tucked into the waistband of my HAZMAT suit. Goodnight, nurse!

Legality of the Flotilla Action

Interesting overview of the relevant legal issues.

Summer's Here and the Time Is Right...

Well, ok - I won't actually be dancing in the streets this summer. I'll be studying - a LOT.

So as the news slows down and my studying picks up expect the blog to go days without a post. You can always keep up with me on Twitter and at TFT as well.

Here's to August...

Simple Questions Regarding the Flotilla

John Cole has a few,

I don’t see this ending any time soon, and if anyone has some answers to basic questions, I would love it:

1.) Why is the Israeli government simultaneously reporting that they knew all sorts of terrorists and unseemly types were on the ships but that their troops were unprepared for resistance? And since they have them all in custody, who exactly are the unseemly types?

2.) Why on earth did they send in commandos armed only with paintballs, as I have read somewhere. Does that make sense to anyone? Even on guard duty at the front gate of my barracks in Germany in the early 90’s, I carried live ammo, even if it had tape over it. But paintball guns on a commando raid? Seriously, wtf?

3.) Why did they attempt to go in at night via helicopter 70 miles out at sea, rather than use a more traditional manner of boarding during daylight hours and in Israeli water so there could be no questions about the legitimacy of the boarding?

If anything, I think the biggest hit to Israel is regarding the competence of her military and government. For the life of me, I do not understand why even rabidly pro-Israel supporters can not recognize what a disaster this is and will continue to be. The Netanyahu government has shot itself in the head, and now appears to be reloading. Has everyone gone mad?
